Атолл, состоящий из коралловых рифов Уилкс [Wilkes], Пил [Peale] и Уэйк [Wake] в центральной части Тихого океана между островами Гуам [Guam] и Мидуэй [Midway Islands]. Территория около 7,7 кв. км. Население 126 человек (1997), в основном военнослужащие. Был открыт испанцами в 1568, долгое время оставался необитаемым, назван в честь английского капитана У. Уэйка [Wake, William], высадившегося здесь в 1796. Принадлежит США с 1899. В 1938 авиакомпания "Панам" [Pan American (World Airways)] создала на атолле гидроаэропорт, в 1941 здесь началось строительство военно-морской базы. После нападения на Перл-Харбор [Pearl Harbor] в декабре 1941 японцы после 14-дневной блокады захватили атолл, который оставался в их руках до 1945. В 1962-72 административное управление Уэйком осуществлялось Министерством внутренних дел [Department of the Interior, U.S.], в 1972-94 атолл и база находились в ведении ВВС США [Air Force, U.S.], с октября 1994 - в ведении Командования космической и стратегической обороны сухопутных сил [Army Space and Strategic Defense Command].
